Research into the Horror Thriller Drama Genre....

The Thriller Genre:
Thrillers heavily stimulate the viewer's moods giving them a high level of anticipation, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, surprise, anxiety and/or terror. Thriller films tend to be adrenaline-rushing, gritty, rousing and fast-paced. Common subgenres are psychological thrillers, crime thrillers, erotic thrillers and mystery thrillers. Some of the worlds most popular Thriller films include; Alfred Hitchcocks 'PSYCHO', STRAW DOGS, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, THE SIXTH SENSE.

The Horror Genre: Horror is a film genre seeking to elicit a negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's primal fears. Horror films often feature scenes that startle the viewer; the macabre and the supernatural are frequent themes. Thus they may overlap with the fantasy, supernatural, and thriller genres.Horror films often deal with the viewer's nightmares, hidden fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Plots within the horror genre often involve the intrusion of an evil force, event, or personage, commonly of supernatural origin, into the everyday world. Prevalent elements include ghosts, aliens, vampires, werewolves, demons, vicious animals, monsters, zombies, cannibals, and serial killers. Conversely, movies about the supernatural are not necessarily always horrific.
Popular Horror Films Include: MAMA, TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, SINISTER, JAWS, THE EVIL DEAD, THE SHINING.

The Drama Genre: A drama film is a film genre that depends mostly on in-depth development of realistic characters dealing with emotional themes. Dramatic themes such as alcoholism, drug addiction, infidelity, moral dilemmas, racial prejudice, religious intolerance, sexuality, poverty, class divisions, violence against women and corruption put the characters in conflict with themselves, others, society and even natural phenomena. Drama is probably the broadest movie genre and includes subgenres such as romantic drama, sport films, period drama, courtroom drama and crime.
Most popular drama films include: THE GREAT GATSBY, THE GODFATHER, TITANIC, TROY, PULP FICTION.

Ancillary Task 2 - Poster 3

THE PURGE - THRILLER HORROR DRAMA CRIME
This movie poster is very different in design to the other posters I have looked at. The movie title is located in the bottom centre of the poster it however does not stand out due to the bold coverline located at the top of the page. The text of the movie title and coverline is very clear bold, easy to see and understand. A similarity to the others horror thriller movie posters would be that the name of the actors/actresses that feature in the film are no highlighted on the poster. The focus of this poster is the storyline rather than the actors. This is a very plain designed poster with a grey coloured background and bright bold text. There is no main image to attract the audience just a symbol and the bright text. REMINDER ALL EMERGANCY SERVICES WILL BE SUSPENDED is the main attraction on this poster. This is an interesting and unusual coverline grabbing peoples attention and making them want to research into what the film is about. This poster tells you a lot about the storyline rather than keeping it a secret the audience wants to find out. This poster persuades you to go and see the movie because you want to find out the effect of the storyline and how it all pans out.

Ancillary Task 2 - Poster 2

YOU'RE NEXT - HORROR THRILLER

This movie poster is slightly more interesting than the posters of Orphan and The Conjuring. Although there is still only one image and basic texts there appears to be more of a story to the image. The movie title is located bang in the centre of the poster making it easy for passers by to see and know exactly what they are looking at. The evil characters head is directly above this wearing what looks like a pig mask and the two together create the initial idea of the movie. The movie title appears to be written in blood which reflects the thriller horror tone of the movie. Again there is no focus on the names of the actors and actresses on the poster. The posters design although pretty basic shows you the evil character with it's weapon directly so the secret is more about the storyline rather than the evil character itself. The poster is extremely dark around the edge and has an eerie lighting to the middle where the evil character is highlighted. This character is shown to be the light in the dark that you don't want to see. This poster persuades you go and see the movie as you want to find out what the movie title You're Next is relating to and what the story is behind the pig masked character.

Teaser Trailer Questionnaire - Target Audience Research

After completing my questionnaire I decided on the target audience of 15-28, I then re asked my questionnaire to people within this age group...

Ancillary Task 2 - Poster

ORPHAN - THRILLER
This is again a very simple film poster. The main character Esther is the focus of the poster. The movie title is located bottom centre of the poster where it stands out and is featured well. The text looks as though somebody has scratched the title onto the poster representing a slightly scary feel to the poster. The names of the actors/actresses are also not shown on this poster as it is all focused on the one character Esther. This posters design is very basic with only one main image and few texts. The facial expression of Esther reflects the creepy tone and mood of the film showing us that she is the evil within this movie. The dark lighting surrounding her makes her stand out more and draws attention to the poster. Esther also fades into the dark showing that she is a part of it rather than a 'light in the dark' which we would associate our good hearted characters to be. This poster does have a slogan to draw you in 'THERES SOMETHING WRONG WITH ESTHER' stands out in clear text at the top immediately letting you know that there is something wrong with this character. The slogan then continues at the bottom JULY24 CAN YOU KEEP A SECRET. This then alerts you of when the movie is released and that their is something you will find out by viewing the film. This draws the audience in making them want to know what the secret is. This movie poster is very persuasive as all attention is drawn to the fact there is something wrong with this character making you want to find out what it is. Your eyes are then directly diverted to the release date making you make a mental note of when the film is released.

The Conjouring - Thriller Horror

The Conjuring - Horror Thriller

USP; Based on a true story - this will attract people who are interested in the story and those who believe this will make the film even better and scarier for them.

Sound; In the first 6 seconds of the trailer a normal calm song is heard playing in the background whilst you hear children laughing and playing, the song then dramatically stops as the cellar is found marking the point of the horror to start. A bulb then blows making a loud bang, a moment of silence is heard then a "clap clap" and dramatic music is heard as well as a scream. These sound effects add to the intensity of the trailer making the audience more interested in trailer.

Editing; The trailer begins very fast paced and only slows down to showcase the finding of the 'horror'. The rest of the trailer is then very fast paced showing lots of different sequences that take place throughout the movie. Fast pans and quick transitions are used throughout to show the different scenes. Special effects are used to show a blowing bulb, someone being dragged across the floor and someone floating in mid air.

Credits and Intertitles; Brief credits were shown at the beginning of the trailer to show that the film was made and produced by Warner Bro's, Based On A True Story was then shown 12 seconds in to show that the movie was based on a true story therefore attracting more attention and the film name and release date were shown at the end. There tends to be few credits and intertitles during a teaser trailer as to showcase the movies storyline rather than the name of the actors involved.

Shot types/Camera Angles and Movements; An establishing shot is used at the start of the trailer to show the audience where the movie is set. In this case we are shown the movie takes place in an old house. A mix of long shots and mid shots from eye level are used to show the children playing inside the house before the cellar is discovered. A medium close up is used to show the uncovering of the cellar, A low angle shot is then used to show the main women character lighting a match. Usually a low angle shot would signify her to be the one in power however in this case she is not and the "clap" of two hands behind her show she is in fact the lower dominance. An over the shoulder close up shot is then used to show a childs emotion and fear. The trailer ends with a glimpse of the evil through a over the shoulder close up shot also.

Mise En Scene; The lighting throughout the whole of this trailer is very dark and eerie. At some points a flash of bright light is used to change the dynamics and make the audience jump. The characters costumes show that they are not overly wealthy as they are slightly dirty and loose. The costumes also look old fashioned highlighting the fact the film was set back in 1971. The evil characters costumes also represent them as they are floaty and abnormal like the characters themselves. Props used in this trailer include an exploding bulb and a match; both small items but very significant in the trailer. The location of this trailer is shown through an establishing shot of an old farm house. Other locations in the trailer are all inside of the house and are shown through furniture in the background. Hair and make up are both very natural on the children, mother and father. Make up is heavily used on the evil character at the end of the trailer.

Genre; The genre is represented in the trailer through the Mise En Scene and Sound.

Narrative; Their is no specific narrative in this trailer and no voice over to explain what is going on. Based on the dialogue in the film we can tell that the family living in the house discover they have a cellar which then causes all kinds of supernatural happenings which greatly affect the family.

Target Audience; The Conjuring is rated at a 15 allowing nobody younger than a 15 to view the film. From this I would say the target audience would be around 15-30 as people of this age group would be intrigued to see the horror of the film but also to find out more about the 'true story'.

Structure; This trailers structure is a typical OBPE. There is an opening, a build up, the problem then the events.

The movie poster for The Conjuring is very simple. Its simplicity gives a very eerie effect and represents the horror thriller genre of the film. The movie title is predominantly featured here in a very clear easy to read text drawing attention to it and making it easy to remember. The names of the actors/actresses are not focused upon on this poster as the main point being relayed across is the scariness and the fact it is based on a true story. The design of this poster accurately reflects the mood and tone of the film. The dark skies, lighting and fog all show the eerie tone of the film and the dramatic mood. The main image standing out on this poster is of the tree with a rope hanging from it suggesting this was a place somebody will or already has hung themselves. If you then look closer at the poster you will see the shadow of the tree actually shows the body being hung showcasing the supernatural feel to this poster. There is no catchy slogan or inviting coverline drawing you into this poster just the attraction of the simplicity and true story basis. This movie poster persuades you to see and research the film as you want to know the ins and outs of the true story and find out just what has happened in this haunting location.

Crime Thriller Drama Horror....

I have decided to make my Teaser Trailer a  Thriller Horror as I have found it difficult to plan and make a trailer just in the category of Thriller. By adding a Horror aspect I can include more action scenes/special effects and more dramatic moments.
