CRIME THRILLER

Analysis

Now Is Good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENg2HnY5UuM
Drama Romance
Analysis;
USP(Unique Selling Point): The unique selling point of this trailer is the tragedy story and the point of view it is coming from. We are also shown that Dakota Fanning is in the film who is a well known actress and Jeremy Irvine who is an upcoming actor. These are both unique selling points because they will bring old and new audiences to the film.

Sound: A fast paced fun feel music is playing throughout the start of the trailer representing the way Tess is living the final moments of her life in a fun fast paced way however the music then changes to a sadder more hopeful feel representing the hope they have for Tessa and her relationship. The voiceover at the end of the trailer simply points out the name of the film and its release date showcasing the trailer even more.

Editing: The pace of the trailer starts of relatively slow as the audience are introduced to the story but then becomes faster paced when we are aware that Tessa is doing 'as much as I can as fast as I can'. The pace picks up as Tessa begins to start living her life to the full and reality sets in.

Credits and Intertitles: Straight away we are shown that the film is produced by Warner Bros, BBC films and is sponsored by BFI The National Lottery. We are then shown the main cast members names to promote who is in the film and then one lined reviews to showcase how good the film is. The trailer ends with the name of the film and its release date.

Shot types/Camera angles and movements: Again a lot of close up and mid shots are used to showcase the emotion of the characters and to focus the audience onto the story. A low angle shot is used when Tessa is in the no-gravity machine representing her as above everybody, flying, happy and enjoying it however generally in drama theme trailers I have not noticed many high or low angle shots. An extreme close up is used to present the relationship between the two main characters.

Mise En Scene: The whole trailer features in bright lighting, this could be to show the light in Tessa's life when she appears to have lost it all. It could be showcasing her hopes and the love that she holds even when going through something so dark. The characters are shown to be wearing very natural casual clothing each suitable to their age and professions.

Genre: The audience are aware this film is Drama Romance through the representation of the relationship of the two main characters through camera shots and angles, dialogue and music. We can see the drama at the beginning through dialogue when we find out Tessa doesn't have long to live.

Narrative: From the trailer we realise the narrative of Now Is Good is a young girl doesn't have very long to live so sets out to complete her bucket list along the way meeting someone she falls in love with. We have no idea of the ending from the trailer.

Target Audience: This trailer would not appeal to anybody under the age of 13 as there is no exciting fun bright colours to draw them in however this trailer would appeal to a target audience of an older age range such as 15-45 as people of this age would be able to understand and digest the story properly and enjoy watching the highs and lows of a tragedy.

Structure: This trailer follows OBPE as there is an opening , a build up, a problem and then the events however the problem and events tend to mix in together.

The Bling Ring http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0gt7vjruT8
Though also a drama the Bling Ring is very different to Taken 2. The Bling Ring is a crime drama based on a true event.

Analysis;
USP(Unique Selling Point): The unique selling point of this film is that the story is based on actual events. This is a unique selling point because the story is based around something that actually happened rather than the story being made up. The audience are then either intrigued to see the film and looked up what happened in real life or already know what happened in real life and then are intrigued to see the film version. Another unique selling point is that the film stars Emma Watson and upcoming British actress who is branching out into characters we are not used to see her playing.

Sound: The Bling Ring begins with the song Crown on the ground by Sleigh Bells an energetic song linked well with the scenes playing behind. The heavy beat of the song also works well with the heavier drama scenes such as the car crash and makes you intrigued as to what the teenagers had done to end themselves in that situation. Only one piece of dialouge is used throughout this teaser trailer 'Lets go shopping' right at the beggining. By doing this you are left to decide what you think the trailer is about and leaves the audience wanting to know more.

Editing: This is a medium paced trailer showing different sequences in the movie probably in a non chronological order so that the audience doesn't know how the film is played out and then find it boring. There are no special effects used in this teaser trailer. The transitions in this trailer are fast paced constantly moving to different scenes and locations. This appears to be a common part of a drama themed trailer.

Credits and Intertitles: Credits and intertitles involved in this trailer include who the film is produced by, the director, the fact it is based on actual events and the age rating.

Shot types/Camera angles and movement: Like other drama trailers there are a lot of close-up shots used to show what is going on clearly and focus to get the trailers point across. As close up shots are heavily used in drama themed trailers I plan to use them in my teaser trailer.

Mise En Scene: The whole trailer is relatively dark representing the secrets and the lies involved in the film.
The costumes appear to match the characters personalities very well such as when the trailer begins we see them clearly being somewhere they shouldn't with their costumes being dark coloured and hooded, later on in the trailer we see them having stolen from a rich persons house dressed in what look like expensive nice clothing.
Props used include the 'possesions' of somebody whose house is being broken into which are all expensive brands giving the impression the teens are breaking into the house of somebody with a high profile and a lot of money. There are lots of different locations in this trailer including somebodys house,  a bar and outside locations. The locations in this trailer show how the teens are getting the stuff and money and where they are using it.

Genre: We can see this is a Crime Drama due to the fast paced sequences and action moments such as the car crash. Having learnt this I now know that in my trailer I should include fast paced sequences and a key moment.

Narrative: The narrative of this trailer is five fame hungry teens breaking into the houses of high profile personal and stealing from them. We can see the narrative then develops into much more such as a car crash and police raid however the trailer gives nothing away making the audience want more.

Target Audience: The target audience of this film would be teens aged 17-25 as the film is based around 5 teenagers who are obsessed with the celebrity lifestyle much like many teenagers today. This trailer will also attract those who like films based on actual events and people who followed the actual events in real time.

Structure: This trailer does not follow the usual OBPE as there is an opening, a build up and event but not really an ending allowing the audience to want to know what happens next and keep an eye for a longer trailer and the actual film itself.

Taken 2 - Thriller, Crime, Drama, Action/Adventure
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVrpmbpHUJ8

Analysis;
USP - Set in Istanbul, Turkey. Location different to home of the characters. Iconic place located in both continents of Asia and Europe. Features Liam Neesons name - popular actor, unique to the first Taken film.

Sound: Tension music throughout building up to big moments. Constant soundtrack throughout. There is no voiceover in this trailer however quotes from the characters are layered over the trailer clips to give an insight to the audience as to what is going on without having an outside voiceover. Quick loud booms are heard throughout the trailer giving the action thriller feel.

Editing: The trailer moves at quite a quick pace changing between shots and locations with fast pans of the area and quick transitions. Special effects such as fireworks, gun shots and explosions are used in the trailer to showcase the action and draw people into wanting to know how and why it happened and what happens next. A shot reverse shot is used to show the emotion between Liam Neeson and Famke Janssen at an important moment in the trailer and film and a match on action on Liam Neeson when he is talking on the phone showing the importance of this moment and showcasing the action and drama.

Credits and Intertitles: 20th century fox, Liam Neeson name credit to attract Liam Neeson fans and also makes viewers aware that Liam Neeson who was unique to Taken 1 is also in Taken 2 and the film title Taken 2 to alert viewers with the name of the film.

Shot types/Camera angles and movement: An establishing shot is used at the start of the trailer to showcase where the film location is set, this case being Istanbul Turkey. There are fast transitions between the different shot types and angles. Throughout the whole trailer there are a couple more establishing shots of the area at key locations. Many mid and close up shots are used throughout the trailer to show the emotions of the characters within the film. The emotions mainly used in this film trailer are fear and worry relating to the drama and action genre.

Mise En Scene: The trailer starts off in a light setting and then slowly gets darker as the trailer moves along showing the lighter side of the story and the dark action filled scenes. The characters costumes are very typical to their nationalities for example the Americans are wearing Jeans and a baggy shirt for the women and Liam Neeson is dressed in a smart suit representing his authority and profesionalism. One character (Kim) also wears a bathing suit with an open top going against what a women it Turkey should seen to be wearing due to religous beliefs. There are many props used in the trailer such as mobile phones, a picture of Liam Neesons character walking, an ipod and guns. All these props are important to the film and give the audience an idea of what to expect. The location of this trailer is heavily shown through establishing shots of key locations. People can automatically tell the film is set in Istanbul Turkey as one of the first shots is of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. We then also know of the films location due to the first dialouge being 'Welcome to Instanbul'. There are lots of different locations throughout the trailer such as the hotel room, the hotel pool, a boat, the hotel lobby, market streets and an unknown location where people are shown to have been kidnapped. Some fake blood is used in the trailer to show the intensity of the action and also leaves audiences wondering how and why it is there drawing in attention. The American characters have very typical hairstyles to their nationality as do the Turkish characters. The Turkish have the stereotypical beard and longer hair on men.

Genre: The genre is represented in this trailer through the Mise En Scene and scenes placed into the trailer. Many fast paced scenes are used to present the action and dialouge is used to show the drama of the story unfolding.

Narrative: The narrative of this trailer is a family trip to Istanbul where they are being watched and then kidnapped. We find out later in the trailer through dialouge 'I killed your son because you kidnapped my daughter' allowing the audience to believe that this was the reason for the family being kidnapped. We then see an action sequence of the father and daughter fighting to get the mum back.

Target Audience: The target audience of this film is people aged between 17-40 because at this age they will understand the story and be interested in the story line.The target audience also incudes fans of the first Taken film which had the same target audience. 17-25 years olds will be drawn to the story line because they are at an age where they will be going on holiday without parents and can relate to the dangers that this holds, 25-40 years old will enjoy the storyline and enjoy letting their children or themselves see the dangers that holidaying alone can hold and they will also enjoy the action theme.

Structure: The structure of this trailer is typical OBPE. There is an opening, a build up, the problem then the events.

How to analyse a film trailer...

In a film trailer you can analyse the:
  • Unique Selling Point (USP) - This is a point that makes this film (trailer) different from the rest or something unique to draw the audience in. It could be the director of the film or an actors name e.g the Goodfella's trailer features Robert De Niro's name; this is a unique selling point because people will heavily associate his name with good films of that particular genre due to his involvement in Godfather II. A unique selling point can also be when an actor features in a film they are not usually associated with such as Adam Sandler a comedy actor being in an action packed thriller.
  • Sound - Music/Voiceover/Dialogue/Sound Effects
  • Editing - Pace, Special Effects, Transitions, Shot-Reverse-Shot, Match-on Action e.t.c
  • Credits and Intertitles - Names, Awards
  • Institutional Reference
  • Shot types/Camera angles and movement
  • Mise En Scene - lighting, costume, props, location, make-up, hair
